7. As a Driven Leaf by Milton Steinberg. Fiction brings the age of Talmud to life, and explores the times of Elisha ben Abuyah, whose struggle to live in two worlds destroyed his chances to live in either. "A novel of ideas and passions...an exploration of Judaism in conflict with a vigorous and powerful surrounding culture--the pagan world of Greece and Rome." back of book. 21. Old Testament Survey by William LaSore Recommended by Lenore Mullican. Available from Amazon.com. This is perhaps THE BEST textbook on this topic. After looking it over, I can only say WOW! " Since its publication in 1982, Old Testament Survey has served as the standard textbook on the background, content, literary quality, and message of the Old Testament. The second edition of this excellent work has been thoroughly revised and updated to take into account new research in the field of Old Testament studies....Reflecting the best of evangelical scholarship, Old Testament Survey provides a comprehensive study of the nature and contents of each of the 39 books of the Old Testament and also considers the historical data and theological themes relevant to the Hebrew Scriptures." (Taken from the book jacket) GET THIS ONE!!! WOW!!!

22. A History of Israel (Westminster Aids to the Study of the Scriptures) by John Bright Recommended by Lenore Mullican. This features new information from recent archaeological and historical findings including the Ebla tablets. Not for beginners. This latest, up to date volume takes into account the constantly changing areas of study, including the most recent discoveries in archaeological findings and historical scholarship. Substantially rewritten are the materials pertaining to the controversial earlier period of the Patriarchs, the Exodus, and the Judges. Introduced for the first time are the preliminary findings of the Ebla tablets--the most important archaeological discovery since the Dead Sea Scrolls. Updated footnotes offer valuable new information and resources. Again...WOW!!!
